តាមព្រះរាជពង្សាវតារប្រទេសកម្ពុជាថា កាល គ. ស. ១៤៣៤ ព្រះបាទពញាយ៉ាត ទ្រង់ចេញចាកចោលព្រះរាជវាំងបាសាណនៅខែត្រស្រីសន្ធរ មកតាំងព្រះរាជវាំងនៅទិសអាគ្នេយ៍នៃ ភ្នំដូនពេញ នាត្រើយខាងលិចទន្លេច្រាបឈាម, កាលនោះទ្រង់បានសន្មតតាំងគោរមនាមព្រះនគរជាដំបូងថា “ក្រុងចតុម្មុខមង្គលសកលកម្ពុជាធិបតីសិរីសោធរ បវរឥន្ទបត្តបុរីរដ្ឋរាជសីមាមហានគរ”; ឯឈ្មោះទន្លេច្រាបឈាម ទ្រង់បានបញ្ញត្តឲ្យហៅថា “ទន្លេចតុម្មុខ” វិញ។ លុះមកដល់ គ. ស. ១៤៣៧ នៅពេលដែលធ្វើសម្ពោធក្រុងនេះ ព្រមទាំងធ្វើព្រះរាជពិធីរាជាភិសេកថ្វាយព្រះនាមទ្រង់ជាថ្មីផងនោះ ព្រះអង្គក៏បានឲ្យសន្មតនាមក្រុងជាថ្មីម្ដងទៀតដោយថែមពាក្យ “ភ្នំដូនពេញ” មកទៀត តែឲ្យខ្លីជាងមុនថា “ក្រុងចតុម្មុខមហានគរភ្នំដូនពេញ” ដូច្នោះវិញ ដើម្បីកុំឲ្យបាត់ឈ្មោះនិងកេរ្តិ៍ដំណែលរបស់ដូនពេញ; តមក គេហៅកាត់ខ្លីត្រឹមតែ “ភ្នំពេញ” ដរាបមកដល់សព្វថ្ងៃ (ម. ព. ចតុម្មុខ និង ដូនពេញ ផង)។
